The 152nd Arbor Day will be celebrated nationally on April 26 this year. Maple Shade will celebrate this event by planting trees in our parks supported through a grant from the Woodard & Curran Foundation (https://www.woodardcurranfoundation.org/gwl). The grant, awarded to non-profit organizations, was provided to Sustainable Maple Shade in support of organizations working to protect our water and environment.
As stated by the Arbor Day Foundation, trees play a critical role in creating healthier, safer, and more connected communities. They clean our air, filter our water, and even slow storm surge and flooding in our cities. Trees also provide shade and cool our cities by up to 10 degrees, which can help prevent heat-related deaths in urban areas.
Even as social and economic issues fracture our society, trees continue to connect communities, cultures, and generations. Neighborhood trees have shown the ability to reduce stress, improve overall health and development in children, and encourage physical activity. And a healthy community wide tree canopy fosters economic advantages as well as an increase in civic pride among residents.
As we finalize our planting plans we'll post what types of trees will be planted at which parks on what dates so you can join us in celebrating Arbor Day. You can also help celebrate Arbor Day by planting a tree or trees on your own property or organize a tree planting with a community organization, school, scout troop, etc. you may belong to.
